4:44p Cracked 20k
We're almost to the halfway point of Nanowrimo, and I just cracked 20k. Math says that I need 23,324 for today, so, I'm not doing too shabbily at this point. When I started today I was in the 16,000's still...
So, yeah.
It's 4:32 pm and the sun is gone. At the far eastern edge of the eastern time zone, the dark comes chomping off the ocean a tad bit sooner than in the 'Zoo. Funny, I used to live 35 miles from Western edge of the time zone, and now I live like 5 from the Eastern.
Not much to report, other than the writing. Though, on the writing front, I have two other ideas that are slowly inching to prominence. Actually, that's a lie. The newest would be a work of nonfiction, believe it or not. The more I respond to Ask Me Anything (I've been doing it for a year), the more I think it might be fun to patchwork together some kind of vile guide to being vile (and getting away with it). It would be written tongue-in-cheek, but it would be honest, all the same.
We'll see.
Becky and I are thinking about going to Maine next weekend, since we'll already be traveling a bit to go to Cape Cod for dinner with somebody (I don't recall who). I may, or may not, try and drive by Stephen King's house, haha.
Maybe leave a note on his gate that says, "Hey, thanks dude."
This reminds me of another musing. If you've read my rambling POV's on subjects (hint: they always end in nihilism), you might recall a certain online community to which I belong's cognitive dissonance when it comes to religion. It got a bit more interesting yesterday, when somebody asked something along the lines of "Should you offer as much respect to Scientology as you do Christianity?"
There was a pretty definitive anti-scientology vibe for a while there. I've got a unique perspective on the COS- I mean, how many people do you know that have both a commendation and a plaque from the church? (Well, 2, if you know Fletcher and I). I only mention this to note that the foolish respect everyone's beliefs! excludes Scientologists along with new agers and psychic-believers and Wiccans and such.
I, of course, do not come with the oh-so-fashionable "...but I respect your beliefs" school.
If I can recall Karen's comment (IRL) from a few years ago, "Scott doesn't respect people, so why would he respect an animal?" The wording's off, but I think you get the picture.
WE BELIEVE IN NOTHING.

I really really want to see more, but here are a few of the few that are sustaining me... ( photos 1-3 )

So I bought two pairs of shoes this week -- well, the one I actually bought a while ago but it was back-ordered, and then a pair of house slippers. The others are these, in the black, and you guys they are so comfortable. Finally! It took me months of searching and a giant Zappos order of failure and a week spent running around a conference in miserably uncomfortable cheap shoes, but I finally found a pair of comfortable heels that aren't hideous! I still wish I could have gotten something completely plain, but the detail on these is cute enough, and at least it's not a buckle or a moccasin-tie-thing or a faux loafer. I've been doing housework in them for hours and they're great, except for a slight cramp in the first joint of my right big toe, but that's more of a "not used to heels" thing.
So, since I got those shoes and a bunch of stuff from my mom, it's time for a closet cleanout. I've got four big shopping-mall bags of clothes, four pairs of shoes, and two purses. I also threw out two pairs of slippers and three pairs of shoes that were a) on their last legs and b) redundant anyway. I have work boots I can wear for yard work, there's no reason for me to keep crappy sneakers around. The elastic-strap sandals I regret, but they were seriously about to fall apart. I'd like to have a pair of nice-ish casual sandals for wearing with skirts in the summertime, but that can obviously wait.
So that brings me to... let's see... eightsorry, nine pairs of shoes and one pair of slippers. Three of them are costume-y: black men's wingtips, flat-soled blue boots with buckles, and old-fashioned brown suede heels. I may get around to selling those at some point, but I've been threatening to do that for a long time and it never materializes because I'm lazy.

I've moved into the "sinus headache" phase that seems to come at the end of every illness I ever have, and boy is it unpleasant. It only takes a very small amount of pain to be completely distracting when it's right in the middle of your face.
One of the vexing things about Christmas creep (the progressively earlier marketing of holiday merchandise) is that, when you go to a store's seasonal section in November, you're liable to find a whole bunch of fake greenery and blow-up Santas, but no rakes. Or one type of very crappy rake. This is unfortunate, because my rake was broken for quite some time before I finally gave up on trying to keep the handle attached and threw it away, but now Meijer has no rakes. Even though I'm using the mower to mulch leaves instead of raking the entire lawn, there's still stuff that needs to be cleared up.
Oh, well, I need to go to the mall tomorrow anyway -- I'll pick up something at Sears. I wonder who'll pick up the Craftsman brand whenever they finally go under? It's got to be worth a ton, but I think Lowe's already has a deal with Kobalt, and Home Depot probably has something with somebody else.
Oh, and keep those horror movie recommendations coming on the previous post. It bears mentioning that I know approximately jack about foreign horror cinema, except that the Italians do great zombie flicks and the Japanese are scared of long hair. (Is there a thing about that? There's got to be a thing.)

New Dark Tower Book November 11th, 2009 11:21:49 pm
Stephen has announced that he has an idea for a new Dark Tower book, the working title of which will be THE WIND THROUGH THE KEYHOLE. He has not yet started this book and anticipates that it will be a minimum of eight months before he is able to begin writing it.
And, the obligatory Fark Headline from the SHOWBIZ tab:
Cool: Stephen King has decided that the story of Roland doesn't end with The Dark Tower
I just started the 1,000 page brick that is UNDER THE DOME, and, well, here's hoping SK outlives me, so that I'll always have more of his books to read.

11:21p The Neverland Project
So about a month ago, I got the idea to combine photos of Peter Pan and Tinkerbell at D*sneyland in Photoshop, since it seemed like a fun project. I pitched this idea to them and the agreed to help me out. I started out making a list of ideas and got to the park early one morning to meet with Peter. We took a ton of photos, and he even threw some ideas out to me.
About a week later I put all the photos on my phone, met up with Tinkerbell, and showed them to her so she could see how she was supposed to act out. Since it's MUCH harder to do a photoshoot with Tink when there's a constant line waiting for her, we didn't take a whole lotta photos onstage. But we ended up getting through them all and I spent most of October doing these for fun.
Click on them to see the high rez versions at flickr!

Nothing to say for Armistice Day that I haven't said before. Our troops still deserve a better country.
Charles and I signed up for Netflix -- yes, we're that far behind the curve. So far, so good. The hard part is remembering all those movies over the years of which we said "you know, we really oughta see that."
I need to get cracking on my Horror Movies I Should Have Seen By Now list.
( suggestions from a few lists )
Any suggestions? Personal favorites? Don't assume I've seen it unless I've specifically said so in the past -- I've seen a weird cross-section of stuff, especially with all those B-movie festivals under my belt, but that also means I haven't seen a lot of stuff you'd expect.
